About This Project

Budget: £27,000

Our client was having a large rear extension built and wanted the kitchen to form an integral part of the new entertaining space. The kitchen needed to be a separate room for cooking, but still allow the cook to be part of any party. They wanted a sociable seating area as they regularly have lively family gatherings which often revolve around food and cooking.

Storage: Every aspect of food storage from cereal boxes to spices and crockery, pans and baking trays needed to have its own specific place

Look and feel: The room needed to be bright and fresh with a bit of “zing”, so the introduction of colour was important to our client.

Special challenges

The room allocated to the kitchen was a mass of doorways and windows leaving relatively little wall space for appliances and internal storage space.

We also had to accommodate fuse boards, water meters, two windows, two doors, the large opening into the new garden room and a very small Yorkshire Terrier!

Design Solution

To accommodate cooking appliances on the wall, where the sides were only 475mm deep, we reduced the depth of the larder cabinets on either side of the horizontally arranged appliances. This brought the ovens forward creating a feature which worked well with our clients’ brief.

With insufficient room on the oven wall to house the larder fridge, we “hid” it in the under stairs cupboard in the hallway. The space was divided and we created an opening though into the kitchen area – the integrated fridge was recessed into the space.

We maximised storage space by creating an upside down “L” shaped storage area on the wall to the left of the hob. This layering effect created extra visual interest. It also created a neat place below the wall cabinets for Yorkshire Terriers bowls, where no-one would trip over them!

An itemised plan was produced to allocate specific space to each type of storage.

We used bright red glass back panels to introduce the splash of colour, which used below the “L” shape also tied both sides of the room together.

Cosentino’s “ECCO” recycled worktops aligned with our clients’ environmental values.

Appliances

A single oven with vario steam, compact oven with microwave and a pair of warming drawers gives flexibility and creativity for cooking, while the coffee centre is great for entertaining.
